Social security tips are the guidelines that individuals and organizations typically use to facilitate the payment of applicable taxes to fund social security benefits under the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA). This section of the Internal Revenue Code identifies who is considered an employee and considered self-employed. The resulting responsibilities for reporting, penalties for non-compliance, and other conditions may vary. It initially implemented these standards in 1942 in response to a unique challenge: allowing employers to hire employees on a temporary and as-needed basis. By offering employers easy methods of documenting and tracking such employees, more employers could afford to hire workers on an as-needed basis.
