What is a Affirmative Action? | Meaning & Definition | Akrivia HCM

It is a policy that promotes inclusion and practices of non-discrimination. Affirmative Action ensures that all applicants are given equal access to employment opportunities while providing a means to remedy past discrimination. Many countries have adopted similar policies to promote inclusivity.

Affirmative Action is designed to help groups that have been historically oppressed by providing them with equal opportunities as privileged counterparts. This started with efforts to help racial minorities and women have the same opportunities as men. Every company should be aware of the affirmative action policy before hiring conventionally and using modern recruitment management software.

Affirmative Action has its roots in the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution states that any person within its jurisdiction is entitled to equal treatment. However, President John F. Kennedy first proclaimed “affirmative action” in a 1961 executive order to help ensure federal contractors did not discriminate based on race, color, creed, or national origin.
