{"id":11105,"date":"2022-12-20T14:50:19","date_gmt":"2022-12-20T09:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/akriviahcm.com\/resources\/?post_type=hr-glossary&#038;p=11105"},"modified":"2024-03-19T16:33:47","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T11:03:47","slug":"leave-types","status":"publish","type":"hr-glossary","link":"https:\/\/akriviahcm.com\/resources\/hr-glossary\/leave-types","title":{"rendered":"Leave Types"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Factories Act of 1948 and the Shops &amp; Commercial Establishments Act, Private and Government organizations must provide mandatory <a href=\"https:\/\/akriviahcm.com\/resources\/hr-glossary\/paid-time-off-pto\">paid time off<\/a> for employees. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from the mandatory paid leaves, a company in India regulates <strong>different types of leaves<\/strong>, such as<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sick leave<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees can take sick leave without furnishing any medical certificate <\/span>if the number of leaves exceeds two days<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The number of sick leaves differs for each company according to their policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Casual Leave\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Casual leave is a period of time that an employee can use for personal reasons. To qualify for casual leave, you must have worked for at least six months for the same employer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Privilege leave \/ Earned Leave<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earned leaves are long-planned leaves gained by employees for travel and vacation purposes, and the employer calculates these leaves monthly. Employees who do not use their earned leave within the 12-15 days of a calendar year will have the leave carried forward to the following year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Medical leave\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees with temporary disabilities will get medical leave if infectious diseases or physical conditions prevent them from performing essential job functions. Usually, an employee may earn 3-8 days from their organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sabbatical leave\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sabbatical leave is when an employee may take a break from work without losing their job but not pursue another career. The employer usually gives this type of leave to employees who have proven they can contribute significantly to the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maternity leave<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maternity leave is a paid leave provided to a woman employee by the employer during childbirth. According to the maternity benefit Act 1961, an organization must provide 12 weeks of paid leave for the post-delivery of her child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Paternity leave<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paternity leave is a paid leave given to male employees as soon as they become a father in the organization. As per the Family and Medical Leave Act, an organization with more than 50 employees is eligible to take 2 weeks of unpaid leaves to take care of a newborn child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bereavement\/Compassionate leave<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compassionate leave is paid time off given to an employee from work to take care of a family emergency like a family member&#8217;s death or ill health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Compensatory leave\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company provides compensatory leaves for employees who work during off-hours to complete extra work, and such employees will get supplementary leave to appreciate their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Floater leave\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floater leave is a paid vacation day that employees can earn to celebrate cultural or religious holidays.
