What is TAN?

TAN, called Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number, is a 10-digit alphanumeric code the Income Tax Department issues to a person responsible for deducting or collecting tax. 

Different types of TAN applications

The two different types of applications are

  • Application to allot a new TAN(Form 49b).
  • Form for correction or change in allotted TAN.

Procedure to apply for TAN

  1. Visit the official website of PROTEAN
  2. Select the TAN option under the services tab.
  3. Choose the New TAN option under the Apply Online dropdown.
  4. Go to the bottom of the page and choose one from the category of deductors.
  5. It will be redirected to Form 49b. Fill in the form and submit it.
  6. Take a printout of the acknowledgment.

Documents required

No documents are required for the new TAN application; only acknowledgment is required if they apply it online.
