Who is an Insurance Agent? | Meaning & Definition | Akrivia HCM

Insurance agents are trained professionals who sell insurance and advise clients when making insurance decisions. A captive insurance agent typically represents one insurer and can only offer its products. An independent insurance agent sells policies representing two or more different insurers. An insurance agent may be required to obtain licensing from the agency’s state to sell policies.

The responsibility of the insurance agent does not limit only to selling the services but also includes the following tasks:

  • Attending seminars, meetings, and programs.
  • Premium calculation and initiate payment methods.
  • Manage databases, records, and bookkeeping of different clients.
  • Assist clients through paperwork completion, policy changes, and claims processes.
  • Monitor client’s insurance claim.
  • Reviewing policies regularly.
  • Processing renewals and cancellations and responding to any queries from clients.
  • Ensure paperwork is done and the requirements of the policy are fulfilled.
